The blind-tooled design on this volume, with single stamps in the central rectangle, is one of the earliest English roll-tooled styles and is typical of the period 1500-1540. The rolled-on design (Oldham, J. Basil. English blind-stamped bindings, HE.h(1), with ornament C.(4)), meant that the binder could decorate a cover more quickly than by individual stamping. The volume is bound in calf over wooden boards. Remains of clasps can be seen at the fore-edge with the catchplate for the clasp on the lower cover in the English and French tradition. The spine has been repaired and decorated at a later stage.

Bequest of Sir Arthur Howard, 1973.

En Novvm Testamentvm (Basileae: [Ioannes Frobenivs], Anno M.D.XXVII. [1527]). Howard q32.

This is from a monastary in Detroit Michigan. A friend ran across this book while helping repair books in a library that were damaged from mold and mildew. Given the book, it was rebound in 1985 by Irene Mitkus, who did special bindings for the Library. She had a huge press in her basement.
